EKO Service Park in Lamia οperates with Near-Zero Carbon Footprint

Since its return to the World Rally Championship calendar in 2021, the EKO Acropolis Rally has committed to continually improving its environmental performance, in compliance with the sustainability programme of the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) and its Environmental Accreditation Framework.

For 2024, the Municipality of Lamia has signed an agreement with the Hellenic Public Power Corporation (DEI) to ensure that all the electricity required to meet the energy needs of the EKO Service Park in Lamia, estimated at around one megawatt-hour (MWh), will be sourced from renewable energy. This will be guaranteed by an Energy Guarantee of Origin (GOs), issued by the Hellenic Renewable Energy Sources Operator & Guarantees of Origin (DAPEEP), certifying that the electricity is generated from renewable energy sources. These "green energy" certificates are defined by relevant European legislation.

This marks the first time in Greece that a large-scale international sporting event has taken such an initiative, bringing it one step closer to climate neutrality and adaptation to climate change, in line with the provisions of the National Climate Law. This also demonstrates the heightened environmental awareness of the EKO Acropolis Rally Organising Committee and the Municipality of Lamia.

Notably, in 2022, following an on-site inspection and evaluation, the FIA awarded the event the "three-star" environmental certification, making it a prime example of an environmentally sustainable sporting event. This certification, which remains valid this year, is the highest awarded by the Federation in the field of the environment and is the first time it has been granted to any entity in Greece.

Based on the EKO Acropolis Rally’s environmental policy, goals have been set to minimise and better manage waste directly generated by the event, to enhance the environmental awareness of all stakeholders, and to optimise the use of natural resources such as water and energy. These efforts contribute to the global fight against the climate crisis and encourage the participation of all stakeholders in environmental preservation. Synergies with local authorities, sponsors, and all involved parties are crucial in achieving these goals.

Giorgos Kazantzopoulos, Head of Environment and Sustainability for the EKO Acropolis Rally, commented: "Energy Guarantees of Origin for an event that utilises existing infrastructure, such as the EKO Service Park, are the most effective way to reduce the environmental footprint of the central hub of the event. At the same time, this approach serves as a model for other events, both within and outside Greece, in combination with the other environmental initiatives developed by the event."
