Acropolis Rally: 1953-2021

The Acropolis Rally is one of the oldest and the most classic rallies in the world. It was first held in 1951, organized by a group of drivers with the support of Shell. One year later, ELPA took over the organization and from 1953 onwards the “Acropolis Rally” as we know it was established.
From 1956 it became part of the European Rally Championship and from 1973, when the World Rally Championship was established, it was included in the official calendar.
As it would be expected, during almost 70 years of existence, the Acropolis Rally has had many important moments. Both at national and international level, like the super special stage taking place at the Olympic Stadium in Athens, in 2005, in front of 65.000 spectators!
During its modern history, the Acropolis Rally has been hosted by many cities, bringing the heart of the race closer to different Regions. Itea, Lamia, Athens and Loutraki were among them in recent years and until 2013, which was the last year that it was included in World Rally Championship. From 2014 to 2018, the Acropolis Rally was part of the European Championship.
This year marks the return of the Acropolis Rally to the pinnacle of rallying worldwide. The decision of the International Automobile Federation (FIA) to add it in the World Rally Championship, was preceded by coordinated actions by the Deputy Ministry of Culture and Sports of the Hellenic Republic with the support of the Government.
The degree of the involvement of the State in the organization of the Acropolis Rally exceeds any precedent in its long history, and as a result, the rally has attracted sponsorships from leading companies from very important industries.
This year’s rally is taking place in three important regions of the country. It will all start under the Sacred Rock of the Acropolis and immediately after, the action will move to the area around Syntagma Square, where the special stage "COSMOTE 5G Athens Stage" will be held.
The next day the rally will move to the Peloponnese and Corinth, with the WRC award-winning special stage "Agioi Theodoroi" and in Loutraki, while on Saturday and Sunday the most historic stages of the Acropolis Rally in Central Greece will have their honorary.
Especially regarding 2021, the return of the Acropolis Rally to the World Rally Championship is combined with the beginning of another goal of the Deputy Ministry of Culture and Sports of the Hellenic Republic, which is the "awakening" of society in matters of road safety.
Promoting driving education is a dominant goal, which is excellently served through motorsport. Both before and after the rally, targeted events will raise public awareness of road safety and proper road behavior.
