72 crews in the Rally of Gods
Seventy-two high-quality crews will test their skills in the Rally of Gods. Some are striving for glory, while others seek the unique experience of participating in one of the world's most iconic rallies.
The countdown to the start of the EKO Acropolis Rally, round ten of the FIA World Rally Championship, has begun. This event features some of the best WRC special stages and has attracted a large number of participants eager to experience the thrill of rallying on Greek soil.
On Thursday, September 5th, seventy-two crews will take the ramp in Lamia. Over the next three days, they will compete in 15 special stages, covering a total distance of 305 kilometers. Participants from 31 countries will be in Greece to contend for this year's titles.
The team leading the Manufacturers' Championship, Hyundai Shell Mobis WRT, will be participating with three i20 N Rally1. Thierry Neuville, the current leader in drivers’ standings, will lead the team, while Ott Tanak will drive the second i20 N in an effort to close the gap between them. Spaniard Dani Sordo will be returning in the third Hyundai, marking his third entry in 2024 with the Korean team.
After achieving three consecutive wins in Poland, Latvia, and Finland, Toyota Gazoo Racing WRT is once again competing for the Manufacturers' title. The team will also take part in the EKO Acropolis Rally with three GR Yaris Rally1, led by eight-time World Champion Sébastien Ogier, who, despite following a selective schedule this year, is on the path to winning the title. Elfyn Evans and Takamoto Katsuta, will join him. Evans is eager to secure a victory that will put him back in the running for the Drivers' Championship.
M-Sport Ford WRT is aiming to build on its recent successes in Poland and Finland. The team has readied three Ford Puma Rally1 cars for the upcoming EKO Acropolis Rally, with Adrien Fourmaux leading the charge. Fourmaux, who has secured four podium finishes this year, is looking to replicate that success in Greece. Gregoire Munster will be driving the second Puma, aiming to gain valuable experience, while Jourdan Serderidis will be behind the wheel of the third M-Sport car, seeking a strong overall finish in the event.
The long list of entries includes 34 Rally2 cars, which guarantee a rich spectacle. Given that WRC2 points leader Oliver Solberg will not start the event, Sami Pajari and Yohan Rossel in Toyota GR Yaris and Citroen C3 respectively, will have a prime opportunity to close the gap to the top of the standings. Of course, winning will not be easy, as a number of experienced crews have their sights set on victory. Among them are Nikolay Gryazin (Citroen C3), Jan Solans (Toyota GR Yaris), Lauri Joona (Skoda Fabia), Kajetan Kajetanowicz (Skoda Fabia) and of course the two former M-Sport Ford drivers, Gus Greensmith and Pierre-Louis Loubet in two Skoda Fabia RS.
The EKO Acropolis Rally will once again serve as the final round of the Junior World Rally Championship (JWRC). In an interesting twist, it will count double in the standings. Currently, Estonian driver Romet Jürgenson is leading the standings, closely followed by 20-year-old Australian driver Taylor Gill, who is just eight points behind. In third place, Turkey's Ali Turkkan and Paraguay’s Diego Dominguez Jr. are keeping their title hopes alive.
In the list of 72 crews, there are a total of 17 Greek participants. Notable entries in the WRC2 category include the experienced Lambros Athanasoulas-Nikos Zakchaios driving a Skoda Fabia Evo Rally2, along with this year’s surprise of the Greek Rally Championship, Giorgos Amoutzas-Giorgos Iliopoulos, driving an identical car. The 2019 Greek Champion Giorgos Kechagias will be driving a Skoda Fabia RS with Nikos Petropoulos as his co-driver, as will do the talented duo of Panagiotis "Roustemis"-Christos Bakloris. Additionally, Vassilis Velanis-Ilias Panagiotounis and Nikos Pavlidis-Allan Harryman will be utilizing their experience to compete, driving Skoda Fabia RS and Evo respectively. In addition, a number of fast crews will be competing in Rally3-spec cars. Among them, the leaders of the Greek Rally Championship standings, Cypriots Petros Panteli-Charalambos Laos in a Renault Clio and Nontas Karanikolas-Giorgos Kakavas in a Ford Fiesta.
